20-year-old Dan Weatherly needs an outlet for his frustrations with a dragging post-high-school life, so he starts a blog to complain about his loneliness, his college classes, and his low-paying job. When he meets a girl who makes his problems seem less important, he instead begins to chronicle the successes and failures of what he hopes to be a liberating relationship. Dan's friends and a few denizens of the internet chime in to offer their advice, their support, and plenty of ridicule.

This is an excellent first piece from author Alex Hansen. It takes an interesting narrative style because it's written in the form of a blog, and includes narration from secondary characters in the form of blog comments.

"Dan's blog" starts off revealing a lot into Dan's psyche. He's in his early twenties, attending community college, and flipping burgers on the side for fun. He's clearly very intelligent but some things just seem to hold him back in life, particularly his attitude. As the novel progresses, the blog expands its reach with more commenters and even grows to include an international audience.

I have to say, it's one of the few books in which misspellings and incorrect grammar add to the work. The author's ability to slip in and out of multiple characters by writing both the posts and the comments sides of the piece is great.

This book is definitely worth reading.

The Weather Man edition by Alex Hansen Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I'm not in school anymore, but this story brought back a lot of memories (and emotions). There were times when I despised Dan for his behavior, but I suspect that had more to do with the author's ability than the character's character. I looked forward to picking up the story each time to see who was returning to the conversation and what would happen next. Loved the composer word play and found myself trying to come up with one of my own. I also enjoyed Jayne's character and the nod to one of my favorite discontinued tv shows. A not-too-perfect, but very satisfying, conclusion made this a very enjoyable read.
When I cracked open this book I wasn't sure quite what to expect. With a name like The Weather Man I was expecting the book to be a very drab story about a meteorologist, or even a novelization of the Nicholas Cage movie which shares this books name. Thankfully this story is neither of these things.

Instead, I discovered that what I had just opened was a beautifully written set of blog posts by a nerdy but loveable young man. These blog post, which are hilarious in and of themselves, become more exciting once he develops an eclectic, but loyal following of commentators.

This style of writing allows the author to keep the book from getting too romantic in places and too dark in others, as well as providing a wealth of characters for the reader to fall in love with.

A very short read, I could not put the book down once I started. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a fun beach read, or to any young adult looking for insight about what life after high school is like.
